Southern Indiana broccoli to run late into the year

The late fall broccoli crown program of JMR Farms Inc. has expanded this year.

Terry Vieck, president of the Vincennes, IN-based firm, said his vegetable company will be shipping 250 acres of fresh broccoli into late December or even January, weather permitting. In 2016, shipping continued until Jan. 10. JMR begins shipping in October.  

After it is cut in the field, broccoli is placed into plastic field bins, which are then hydrocooled. The crowns are then packed and iced for storage before shipping.   

The firm is also a grower-shipper of potatoes, sweet corn, mini and seedless watermelons, pumpkins and green beans. JMR’s fresh products are marketed under the promotion phrase, “Midwestern grown and Indiana’s own.”

JMR sells to independent customers ranging from Kansas City to the U.S. East Coast and Canada. C.H. Robinson also markets some of the firm’s vegetables.   

The firm grows 400,000 bushels of white corn for Azteca Foods Inc. to manufacture Mission brand tortillas in Evansville, IN.  

Natural resources of a replaceable aquifer and an unusual clay-sand-organic mix soil result in the production of very abundant crops that have a very good taste, Vieck said. Abundant water supplies allow for all of the crops to be irrigated.  

The German-native family is in its sixth generation of growing vegetables on this unique property. The family added a new interesting historic dimension when Vieck’s sister married Bob Richardville, a partner in JMR who is a direct descendent of Jean Baptiste de Richardville.

Initially a French fur trader, Richardville was born around 1761 near Fort Wayne. He married into the Miami tribe and became the last akima (civil chief) of the Miami people. He signed various treaties with the United States and by his death in 1841 he was considered the wealthiest man in Indiana. He acquired more than 20 square miles of property along the rivers.
