DelFrescoPure touts strawberries and heirloom tomatoes

DelFrescoPure, based in Kingsville, Ontario, is a leader in the greenhouse hydroponic sector and prides itself on being able to provide consumers with strawberries all year long by putting a lot of time and care into growing the highest quality strawberries possible. The company currently has 17 acres of greenhouses dedicated specifically to strawberries.

“Our history with strawberries goes back over 35 years,” said Ray Mastronardi, vice president of sales for the company. “Since the beginning, our growing philosophy has always been about innovation and finding the best way to grow strawberries as well as other commodities. For instance, we use good bugs to fight off the bad bug which drastically minimizes the need for pesticides, leaving the consumer with a cleaner crop they can feel good about eating.”

“When it comes to Heirloom tomatoes, we stay competitive by having hand-selected the best variety,” Mastronardi said. “This means our crop has a beautiful outcome. These tomatoes not only look delicious but are paired with very creative packaging to increase the appeal. On top of all that, we have doubled the size of our heirloom program to meet the rising demand.”

In 2020, the company expects a steady market for heirlooms and the early signs are an excellent crop will be ready.

“The biggest challenge we are facing right now is trying to educate consumers on the differences between conventional and greenhouse-grown products,” Mastronardi said. “We are utilizing multiple social platforms, interviews and discussions with our leadership team to convey the message. We have various outlets that consumers are encouraged to share feedback and ask questions on so everyone can gain a better understanding of how we grow our produce.”

For those looking to talk tomatoes, DelFrescoPure will be attending the Southern Exposure conference and trade show, exhibiting behind booth No. 653.

“This year we are very excited to be showcasing our new 1.5-pound clam for our strawberries as well as new packaging updates for our beans and Heirloom tomatoes,” Mastronardi said.

The company’s President and CEO Carl Mastronardi will be attending alongside the sales team and marketing manager Fiona Mclean.

“SEPC is a fabulous show to not only attend but exhibit in. It is the perfect show to start the new year,” Mastronardi said. “We are very excited to be releasing a new pack format and some featured commodities.”

In 2020, the DelFrescoPure buzz is all about three commodities — Euro Bean, Heirloom Tomatoes and YES!Berries.

“We are very excited to promote these with a large advertising push in the coming year,” Mastronardi said. “There is also a potential for some more acreage added in the coming months.”

Mclean would like to see more retailers presenting a clear message to consumers to help increase the sale of strawberries.

“We could implement more shelf-talkers, shelf strips and display merchandisers to draw attention to YES!Berries,” she said. “If we could implement all these aspects it would be a major win at the store level.”
