Cañon Potato acquired by MountainKing

Although Cañon Potato, a family-owned operation that had packed and shipped potatoes for six decades, made the decision to cease operations recently, the Center, CO, packingshed will continue to operate under the new ownership of Houston, TX-based MountainKing Potatoes.

David Tonso, who served as Cañon's president and chief executive officer for several years, recently joined RPE's Monte Vista potato packing and sales facility. david-tonsoDavid TonsoHe and former Cañon sales agent Matt Glowczewski are part of RPE's Colorado sales team.

Tonso told The Produce News July 2 that several factors led to the closure of Cañon's doors.

"Because of the supply situation and the water situation as well as changes in the industry, we made a very difficult decision to close our family business," he said. "But we found a very good opportunity with MountainKing and their needs to pursue a sale.

"The close relationship between the two entities made a natural fit," he continued. "We shared growers, and the warehouses are in close proximity in Center, so it made it mutually beneficial for both companies."

Tonso said that other considerations also factored into the sale decision.

"From my standpoint, one thing that made the arrangement with MountainKing so attractive is their desire to continue to employ past warehouse personnel at Cañon," he said.

"We had 60 years of a great journey as a family business, thanks to the efforts of my dad and uncle and other family members," Tonso reflected. "Now I look forward to being a part of the dynamic RPE team."
