Sage enlists NASCAR star to support healthy kids

NASCAR superstar Kasey Kahne made a pit stop in Yakima, WA, to join longtime sponsor Sage Fruit for a day dedicated entirely to children.

The day was packed full of activities including a tour of Children's Village, a barbecue meet-and-greet for fans, and a ride along at Yakima Valley Speedway.

The day began at Children's Village, where Kahne was given a tour of one of the valley's greatest assets. Children's Village provides over 30 different services to children with special health care needs and their families. Following the tour, Sage Fruit hosted a barbecue at Bob Hall Sunfair Chevrolet in support of healthy kids. Childhood obesity is sweeping the nation, and last fall Sage Fruit became a partner with Memorial Hospital, the YMCA, PNWU, and the Safeway Foundation to bring the ACT program to Yakima.

ACT, which stands for Actively Changing Together, is a 12-week program for overweight kids and their parent or guardian. Weekly classes aim to make a permanent lifestyle change within the entire family.

Kahne met with several participants of the first session of ACT and congratulated them on their success. He also met with 250 lucky fans that were chosen to attend the meet-and-greet. Yakima Mayor Micah Cawley then proclaimed June 20, 2013 to be "Kasey Kahne Healthy Kids Day" in Yakima, WA.

Later in the day, the two Miracle Children, their siblings, and a raffle ticket winner from the barbecue were treated to a ride along with Kahne at the Yakima Valley Speedway.

"We were so excited and honored that Kasey took time out of his busy schedule to share in this day with us," Kaci Komstadius, social media director at Sage Fruit, said in a press release. "His presence helped create so many wonderful memories for the people in attendance. The whole experience was humbling and unbelievably rewarding. We cannot think of a better role model to represent our company."
