Mark Hanks, vice president of sales, marketing and operations for DNE World Fruit LLC, headquartered in Fort Pierce, FL, recently announced that Dan Schatz has accepted the position of general manager of the company.
“Dan graduated from Cornell University with a degree in economics and received his master’s in finance from Columbia University,” said Hanks. “He brings to DNE extensive sales and marketing experience from Kraft, Pepsi US, and AC Nielsen.”
For 20 years, Schatz ran a successful consulting firm, Power Marketing, working closely with Ocean Spray Cranberries as well as other perishable, retail and other clients. He and his wife, Ilene, plan to relocate to the Ft. Pierce, FL, area.
“We’re extremely happy to have Dan on board with us full time, and I know he’s going to continue to improve our supply chain efficiencies and our relationship with Ocean Spray and into other perishable commodities,” Hanks added. “I’ve worked with Dan on and off for over 20 years on our Ocean Spray promotions and category management, and he brings a lot of experience to the table.”
Hanks said that DNE’s summer clementines from Chile will be available from June through August. South African clementines will be available from mid-June through July. Clementines are available in two-, three- and five-pound bags.
Navel oranges from DNE will be available from mid-June through October. South African Navels will be available from mid-June through mid-September, while Chilean and Australian Navels will be available from July through October. DNE’s Navels are available in three-, four- and five-pound cartons and eight-pound bags.
Cara Cara oranges will be available from mid-July through mid-September. South African Cara Caras are available from mid-July through August, and the Australian Cara Cara program will run from August through mid-September.
Cara Caras will run from August through mid-September, and are available in cartons and in three-pound bags.
“Daisy mandarins from Australia will be available July and August,” Hanks added. “They are available in 10-kilogram cartons. Minneolas start in mid-July and run through September from Australia and Peru. They’re available in 10-kilogram cartons and two- and three-pound bags.
“Blood oranges start in September and run through early October from Australia,” he continued. “Blood oranges are also available in 10-kilogram cartons. Midknight oranges will be available from mid-September through mid-November from South Africa. They’re available in standard cartons and three- and five-pound bags.”
Hanks added that late-season mandarins will be available from early September through October. South African mandarins will begin in early September and run through October, while Chilean, Australian and Peruvian late mandarins will be available mid- to late September through October.
DNE will also have lemons from the end of June through December. Chilean lemons fill the program from late June through August, and its Mexico lemons start in July and run through December. The company’s lemons are available in standard cartons as well as two- three- and five-pound bags.
Hanks added that the summer citrus programs will see a slight increase over last season, mainly in clementines and Navels, the most-popular varieties in the summer citrus lineup, which account for the majority of the sales.
“DNE sees South African Midknight oranges as a growing citrus item due to its similarity to a Navel — in that it’s seedless — with excellent exterior color and eating quality,” he said. “Overall the summer citrus programs continue to grow each year, providing retailers with a steady supply of citrus throughout the summer and into the back-to-school timeframe.”
DNE World Fruit distributes summer citrus throughout the U.S. and to some Caribbean countries. The Australian product arrives on the west coast of the U.S. and the South African citrus arrives through eastern ports. Chilean and Peruvian citrus arrives on both coasts.
