VIDALIA, GA – Retailers and consumers alike anxiously await the beginning of the Vidalia onion season – and with good reason. The world-famous onion virtually created the sweet onion category and, retailers say, drives the deal and has spurred 12-month consumer demand for sweet onions.
The 2013 season opened April 15, but this year there is a problem in the Vidalia fields – seed stem is causing a significant percentage of the crop to bolt and go to seed.
Still, growers expect to ship several million boxes of America’s favorite onion this season. Southeastern Editor Chip Carter went to Vidalia to find out more about the onion that changed the world, its impact at retail – and the challenges it’s facing this season – in this video report.
