James Buren Hook, president of V.B. Hook Inc., dies at 85

James Buren (Jimmy) Hook, president of V.B. Hook Inc., a wholesale produce company at the South Carolina State Farmers Market, died Sept. 14 following a two-year battle with numerous health issues, according to a statement issued by the company. He was 85.

V.B. hookHook Inc., which was started by Mr. Hook’s father in the late 1920s, was known for its ethical dealings and quality produce. It serves the entire Southeast region from its location on the market.

Mr. Hook was a lifetime member of Brookland Methodist Church and served on countless committees and in several different posts of leadership. He sat on the board of the West Columbia Zoning Committee, and was a member of the Rotary Club. He was a firm believer in doing his civic duty and giving back to the community.

Mr. Hook was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Willeen. He is survived by his son, Marty Hook (Julia); a daughter, Sherri Hook Liles (Tom); six grandchildren, Michael Hook, Jennifer Latham, Kacey Mattox, James Liles, Van Hook and Savanna Liles; five great-grandchildren, Riley and Liles Mattox, Jack and Katie Latham, Joseph, Bella and Weston Hook; two sisters, Addie-Jo Thomas and Elnora Gantt; and dozens of nieces and nephews.
