The Produce Marketing Association announced May 9 that public relations veteran GLENN BOYET joined its staff as senior director of public relations.

Mr. Boyet comes to PMA with a 20-year background in public relations, government affairs and public policy in the financial services and information technology industries, as well as with leading member and trade associations. Most recently, he was head of public relations worldwide for the Project Management Institute, where he directly oversaw media and analyst relations and executive speechwriting, as well as bringing such luminaries as President William J. Clinton to speak at its annual conference in 2010. Prior to that, Mr. Boyet spent eight years heading global corporate communications for Micro Focus International plc, a United Kingdom-based application development and modernization organization.

He has also provided marketing and communications expertise at DSG Inc., the PCI Security Standards Council, Mellon Financial Corp. (now Bank of New York Mellon), the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, Ernst & Young, Arnold & Porter and for the late U.S. Sen. Daniel P. Moynihan. Mr. Boyet began his career as a sports reporter with a weekly newspaper in Yorktown, NY, and later at WFUV-FM in New York, where he also produced political and city interest programming.

"Glenn brings not only significant public relations expertise to drive strategic communications programs, but gives PMA a leader in global public relations activities," Bryan Silbermann, PMA president and chief executive officer, said in a May 9 press release.

Mr. Boyet reports to Lorna Christie, executive vice president and chief operating officer, and works closely with PMA staff and volunteers on member relations, marketing and business development. In addition, he works with PMA's government relations team to attract interest in the work PMA does advocating on behalf of members.

"The produce industry and the health and safety of the global produce supply continue to find PMA the voice of the entire supply chain," Mr. Boyet said in the press release. "I understand the great impact both traditional and social media are playing across all industries, and I look forward to putting my skills to work to help PMA expand the value and service we provide to members around the world through innovative communications programs."

Born in the Bronx, NY, and raised in Somers, NY, Mr. Boyet earned his bachelor's degree in political communications from George Washington University in Washington, DC, and his master's degree in public communication from Fordham University in New York. He has also completed his doctoral course work and examinations in communication from the University of Missouri in Columbia, and held a communications fellowship at Kent State University in Kent, OH. He has spent more than five years teaching university-level communications full-time and mentoring student athletes, several of whom have played professional basketball and football. Mr. Boyet continues to teach students part-time in public speaking and mass media.

 

PETER WILDER has joined To-Jo Mushrooms Inc. in Avondale, PA, as director of business development. In this role, he will be responsible for developing national and emerging restaurant chain sales for the company's lines of fresh and value-added mushroom products.

sponsorship and advertising sales manager. In that role, he was instrumental in expanding PMA's sponsorship and advertising sales through the creation of revenue streams across a portfolio of events working with some of the larger U.S. produce companies. Before working for PMA, Mr. Wilder spent 15 years as director of business development for the McDonald's LPGA Championship.

 

"Peter Wilder brings to To-Jo a unique combination of skills and experience in business development," Paul Frederic, To-Jo's senior vice president of sales and marketing, said in a May 10 press release. "We welcome him to our organization and know he will have a remarkable impact on the development of our national chain-account business."

To-Jo is a fourth-generation family operation that started growing mushrooms in 1932.

 

JOE SABATO joined the produce brokerage company Victor Joseph & Son Inc. in Hackensack, NJ, on Monday, April 25. He is in the sales area of the company, specializing in tomatoes and peppers. Mr. Sabato, 47, most recently spent 15 years at another produce brokerage firm, KB&R Trading Corp. in Tinton Falls, NJ. Mr. Sabato, who has been in the produce industry since he was 21 years old, said of his new situation, "The people here are very nice. I'm very, very happy."

 

NICK ALLEN joined Ben B. Schwartz & Sons Inc. in Detroit April 18.

Mr. Allen will handle a full line for the company, serving as a salesperson and buyer. Before coming aboard at Ben B. Schwartz, he worked at Mastronardi Produce for four years. He has worked in the produce industry for eight years.

 

Ready Pac Foods Inc. in Irwindale, CA, has hired MARC SERRIO as the company's vice president and chief financial officer. Reporting directly to Michael Solomon, Ready Pac Foods Inc.'s president and chief executive officer,

Mr. Serrio joined Ready Pac in January as a financial executive management consultant. His new position took effect on May 2. He is responsible for overseeing all finance, accounting, budgeting, analysis, treasury and insurance areas.

 

A graduate of the University of Southern California, Mr. Serrio began his financial career working for McDonnell Douglas Corp. He then returned to USC's Marshall School of Business, where he earned a master of business administration degree. Throughout his career, he has held key financial roles with organizations such as Taco Bell Corp., the Walt Disney Co., and El Torito/Chi-Chi's Restaurants. He also held the position of chief financial officer for six years with Tritech Software Systems and for three years with Detection Logic Inc.

He lives with his wife, Marley, and their three children in Pasadena, CA. He will work from the company's corporate headquarters in Irwindale.

 

RODGER MULLEN has joined Greatwide Logistics Services, a national provider of third-party logistics services based in Dallas, as executive vice president responsible for transportation management and corporate marketing.

In this new senior management role, Mr. Mullen will manage and be responsible for all Greatwide non-asset transportation services throughout the United States and Canada, as well as corporate marketing.
