Veteran newsman John Niblock of Charleston, SC, has been named Carolinas Editor & Sales Manager for The Produce News. Niblock has written for The Produce News since 2005, serving most recently as Floral Editor and Sales Manager.
“John did a terrific job for us directing our floral mass marketing to supermarkets effort, Floral Marketing. He was also involved in covering produce shippers and suppliers in the Carolinas and John has a thorough understanding of the produce trade in these two important states. As he passes the floral section on to Richard Lutes, it is with great pleasure that we announce he will segue to full time coverage of the Carolinas produce industry for us,” said Produce News President Jack Bricker.
“We feel our readers and customers in the Carolinas will be best served by ‘boots on the ground.’ John’s location in Charleston is ideal. On a humorous note, if there are any loyalty concerns by North Carolina produce industry members about John’s South Carolina residency, let me note that his many career honors include the North Carolina Order of the Long Leaf Pine (awarded by the governor), plus, John was named ‘Tarheel of the Week’ by the Raleigh News & Observer. Produce industry members will also be interested to hear that John won the 2000 Steinbeck Essay Contest in Salinas, CA,” added Bricker.
Niblock said he would begin as Carolinas Editor by traveling to North Carolina and South Carolina in the next few months to meet growers, distributors, suppliers and retailers. “I have spent most of the last four decades living and working in the Carolinas and have been to most of the 146 counties in these two states,” he said. “I look forward to meeting new produce industry professionals and renewing acquaintances with those I have met before,” he added.
Niblock began his journalism career as a police reporter on a beat on Chicago’s South Side. He then became a reporter and rewrite desk editor at Star Publications in suburban Chicago. He was recruited to write for Floral Marketing by his sister, Mary Crawford, then editor of Floral Marketing, and became editor in 2008.
