Gonzalo Avila, previously vice president and general manager of Malena Produce Inc. in Nogales, AZ, has been named chief executive officer.
Avila told The Produce News that he has been working in the family business in Nogales since 2002. He began in f.o.b. sales, then worked in program sales before being promoted to general manager.The vice president title was later added to that of general manager.
Avila’s mother, Juanita S. De Avila continues as president of the company.
Prior to working in the sales and marketing side of the business in Nogales, Avila worked on the growing side in Culiacan for a couple of years, he said.
Previously, following graduation from college in 1996, he had worked outside of the produce industry in the financial sector for firms in San Diego and Mexico City.
Malena is a grower-shipper specializing in eggplant, Bell peppers, squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, pickles, chili peppers, grapes and melons. According to a press release, the company is the leading eggplant suppler in North America, a position it has held since the 1950s, and has recently expanded the geographic range of its production in Mexico to provide year-round supplies.
