IFE to offer design contest, demonstrations

Soren Kaplan, author of Leapfrogging, will be the keynote speaker at the International Floriculture Expo on June 20, according to a news release from the show organizers, Diversified Business Communications Inc. Leapfrogging received the 2013 Axiom Best Business Book Award.

The annual IFE show, now on a five-year run at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami Beach, FL, will run June 18-21 (education sessions June 18-19; exhibits, June 19-21) and offer a sixth annual Iron Designer competition, demonstrations, exhibits and awards. A flower-naming ceremony will honor an industry leader.

Education sessions will include a presentation by Bobbi Ecker and Michael Schrader. This year’s topic is Floral Decor for Life’s Celebrations.” Ms. Ecker is with FloraPros in Chicago; Mr. Schrader is director of floral for Schnuck Markets in St. Louis.

Other sessions include one showing how use of color in merchandising can affect sales. Presenters will be Robert De Bellis, designer and education specialist, and Susan Murdock, marketing director, both of World Class Flowers in Egg Harbor City, NJ.

The State of the Industry assessment will be given by Lane DeVries, president and chief executive officer of Sun Valley Group in Arcata, CA; Kasey Cronquist, chief executive officer and ambassador of the California Cut Flower Commission in Sacramento, CA; and John Simko, president of Sunshine Bouquet Co. in Miami.

At an Ask the Experts Session Prince & Prince consumer researchers will detail consumers’ cut-flower and potted plant purchasing at the major floral outlet channels currently, and trends over the past decade. Presenters will be Thomas L. Prince and Timothy A. Prince of Columbus, OH.

The 2012 IFE show drew about 2,000 attendees and offered more than 200 exhibits.
