Goodbye summer — it’s been grand

Hello, October! In the Upper Midwest, the trees are ablaze with spectacular fall colors and the taste of autumn is upon us with “pumpkin spice” seemingly everywhere I look. With cooler days, plenty of football games, the passing of the autumnal equinox, and the apple harvest in full swing, I guess it’s officially time to say a fond farewell to summer. Sigh.

COVER-SHOTOctober October also means it’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Each year, many floral industry companies create promotions to increase awareness and raise funds to find the cure for this insidious disease. In this edition, we report on Silver Vase — one of those companies that is joining in the fight for the cure; Becky Roberts gives a heads-up on the PMA Fresh Summit; Bill Prescott explains why crocosmia should be on your fall floral radar; Lourdes Reyes describes Ball SB’s new breed of limoniums; Nick Fronduto recounts SAF’s Annual Convention; Kasey Cronquist reveals the American Grown Flowers Merchandising Contest winners; we recap the record-breaking Field to Vase Dinner at Wisconsin-based Star Valley Flowers and much more.

So, as summer appears in the rearview mirror, let’s embrace the transition and do as poet Charmaine J. Forde reminds us, “Let the leaves fall where they may — Welcome October — Autumn is here.” See you next month.
