An enduring American love affair

Americans’ love affair with the rose has lasted for centuries and it continues to grow with 85 percent of people claiming the rose as their favorite flower. Roses are currently the top-selling flower in the United States — based on stem count — and it is estimated that Americans purchase nearly two billion roses annually.

A few weeks ago, millions of roses were given to honored moms on Mother’s Day; and now it’s National Rose Month — so how will you celebrate the rose in June? In this edition, we provide you with a refresher on rose floriography; we preview several industry trade shows, conferences and conventions — and offer a special IFE discount promo code for our readers; we applaud some floral industry award winners; Andrew Morse reports on the Canadian cut flower and ornamental plant industry; and Tim Meskill offers tips for saving helium in your floral department.

Hopefully, this summer you’ll be able to take the opportunity to attend some events, network with industry peers, learn about the latest products and trends, and set your course for the second half of 2018.

A wise Chinese proverb says, “A bit of fragrance always clings to the hand that gives roses.” I trust your hands will smell extra sweet this month.
