Hollandia Produce LLC, a grower-shipper of hydroponically grown hothouse produce, has reshaped its “Live Gourmet” living lettuce package to better meet its customers’ needs related to merchandising, physical protection, food safety, sustainability and transportation.
Hollandia’s patented and ultra-modern clamshell, dubbed the “squircle,” enables the Carpinteria, CA-based firm to increase units per pallet by 20 percent, automate much of the packaging processes and reduce the total board feet of cardboard used annually to package and ship its products.
The newly designed packaging retains the merchandising and consumer-friendly features of the company’s legacy packaging while optimizing the interior dimensions of its clamshell, thus creating the ultimate package for the firm’s “Live Gourmet” living Butter lettuce, according to Hollandia.
“We’ve taken the antiquated packaging concept and achieved a functional redesign that is unique, as our ‘Live Gourmet’ living lettuce is in the leafy greens section of the produce department,” the company said in a press release. “Our new squircle clamshell package is modern, colorful and intended to attract attention while differentiating ‘Live Gourmet’ from all the rest.”
The squircle provides more room for lettuce leaves and a resized and reduced root ball area that provides better utilization of available space reducing the exterior dimensional foot print of the clamshell package, according to the company.
Other features of the new squircle packaging are:
• A fresh, ultra-modern look.
• The same room for lettuce leaves inside the clamshell.
• A smaller footprint on the retail shelf.
• A smaller footprint in consumers’ refrigerators.
• Harness-style shipping cases use 40 percent less cardboard.
• Made from 15 percent less plastic.
