Among the businesses operating out of Philadelphia’s new state-of-the-art Wholesale Produce Market is T.M. Kovacevich Philadelphia, a distributor of premium fruit.
And among TMK’s sources for fruit is Wenatchee, WA-based Oneonta Starr Ranch Growers, a grower-shipper that has been providing the Philadelphia distributor with apples, cherries and pears since the 1970s, according to Oneonta Marketing Director Scott Marboe.
In sending well-wishes to TMK and the new market facility, Oneonta’s sales department looked back over the years and noted changes in variety demand as well as increases in overall volume shipped to the East Coast receiver.
Tom Drury, salesman for Oneonta, said that the early years were “heavy to Reds, Golds and Grannies. Now we are seeing more and more Gala, Pink Lady and Honeycrisp apples entering the Philly market during the season.”
Mr. Drury said that demand is good not only for apples but also for pears and cherries, adding, “Business has steadily grown year after year.”
Commenting on the expansion and technological advancements at the new market, Mr. Drury said to his business friends at TMK, “Congratulations on your new home.” And in a postscript, he quipped, “Cindy wants a window, though.”
