MAS’ buying brokerage flourishing a year later

rio rico, az — A buying brokerage for MAS Melons & Grapes LLC was created in September 2018. That plan has worked very well, according to Miky Suarez, who is MAS’ partner and sales manager. “At the end, it is the same company, but we operate totally separately.”

Given the brokerage staff, there was little doubt that it would be a success.

Another member of this Rio Rico staff is Ruben Zuñiga. MAS plugged into its new operation with a ready-made crew, led by industry veteran Rosie Cornelius. Cornelius, who was named the 2018 Pillar of the Industry by the Fresh Produce Association of the Americas, moved into the MAS position with a veteran team of professionals.

Her team kept outliving the businesses of previous employers. They were a buying unit in northern California for Bay Area Produce, which closed after 50 years of operations. Then they worked in Nogales for Grant Hunt, which closed in 2018.

With Rosie Cornelius in Rio Rico are Jerry Meek, Olga de la Torre and Ruben Zuñiga. Working for the buying brokerage from California are Dan Kerrigan and Debra Noyes.

“All of this team I have known for many years and done business with for many years,” Suarez said. “It is a team of people with a lot of experience in what they do. They have the confidence and trust of many companies in Nogales, Texas and California, to sell their products. A lot of people see them as a very good company to do business with.”

The brokerage “adds another aspect of business to MAS Melons on the procurement side,” Suarez indicated. “They buy from other distribution companies like us. We sell some of our products to them and they buy from Nogales, California and Texas; whatever they need. They have their own customers and sell them.”
