O.C. Schulz & Sons Inc. continues to move a good crop of red potatoes. Secretary and Treasurer Dave Moquist said the company’s customers are receiving high-quality product and movement has been good.
“O.C. Schulz & Sons Inc. knows the importance of meeting the needs of customers,” according to the company’s website. “For over 50 years, we’ve been growing, packing and shipping our own potatoes. We even have our own wash plant. That means controlled quality on each load every step of the way. We offer our customers quality from the ground up.”
“We’ve had excellent demand,” Mr. Moquist stated. The lion’s share of the company’s volume, which Mr. Moquist placed at 90 percent, is sold to the fresh market. Although growers in the Red River Valley experienced some problems with soil dryness this season, Mr. Moquist said yields were average to above average.
Potatoes are primarily marketed east of a line drawn from North Dakota to Texas under the “Crystal Champ” label, with additional product sold under the “Schulz Gourmet” label. The biggest share of potatoes is sold to wholesalers and repackers.
This season, Mr. Moquist said the company is doing a little more business with retailers and foodservice.
The company continues to grow the Sierra Rose potato variety for Discovery Garden’s LLC in Oakland, CA. Mr. Moquist said interest in the variety is strong on the West Coast and continues to build in the Midwest.
