Matt Curry, president of Curry & Co., said industry feedback regarding the company’s year-round onion program has been outstanding. “We received a lot of positive comments about our onion programs during this year’s Fresh Summit,” he told The Produce News. “We introduced our Curry & Co. onion and sweet onion boxes this past year, and we’ve had a very favorable response to them. The addition this fall of Richard Pazderski as our director of onion sales has been a real positive, and our Peruvian program, which we expanded this year with our partnership with Suncrest Produce Solutions and Jason Turner, has greatly enhanced our import program.”
The company is located in Brooks, OR, and is a year-round marketer of quality yellows, whites, reds and sweet onions. Onions are sourced both domestically and globally. Seamless transitions between varieties give consumers precisely the onions they are seeking at any given time.
Currently, the company is marketing both domestic and imported onions. “Yellow onions, red onions and white onions are available all year round,” Curry said. “Our current sweet onion offerings are Hermiston Sweets, which are available into December. Our Peruvian sweets will be available through February. Our Hermiston SweetReds are available until March.”
Curry said there have been no surprises this season regarding quality and sizing. “We’ve been getting a good volume of jumbo yellows, and demand has been pretty strong. Our import program on Peruvian sweets is experiencing strong demand,” he stated. “We’ve had strong demand and pull through as we’ve moved closer to the holidays. We’ve had several comments on the size of our Hermiston Sweets, and our Hermiston SweetReds have had exceptional quality and great flavor.”
According to Curry, the third quarter has been a strong one for onion sales.
“We still experience a sales boost at the start of the month. But it seems to have spread throughout the month,” he noted. “So we aren’t seeing as high a peak as we did in the spring and summer for first-of-month sales.”
