Bland Distribution Services expands Donna, TX, facility

by press release | April 15, 2011

Bland Distribution Services in Donna, TX, announced April 7 the completion of an expansion to its cold-storage and dock areas. The distribution center broke ground in January 2008, and subsequent growth since its opening led to a need for expansion of the BDS cold storage space.

With the expansion complete, BDS now has 100,000 square feet of cold, dry, packing, dock and office space at the Donna facility. The cold storage space is divided into eight separately controlled areas with a capacity for 3,100 pallet positions.

Each area incorporates AiroCide technology, an air filtration and anti-ethylene gas system, and state-of-the-art computer-based refrigeration controls. The expansion added six refrigerated dock doors to the facility, bringing the total to 11 doors. BDS also has six dry docks and office space for lease to customers.

“We are most excited about the new refrigerated space for reworking and repacking shipments, which assures the cold chain for our customers,” Nick Sanchez, general manager of BDS, said in an April 7 press release. “The facility has now doubled the controlled temperature zones from four to eight, increased dock doors have brought the loading time from check in to completion down to one hour. This expansion allows BDS to once again grow with their customers and develop new business, as it has been at full capacity since December 2010.”

BDS opened in November 2008 as a cold storage and distribution center for fresh, frozen and dry goods. It specializes in consolidating loads, layer-picking shipments, reconditioning-repacking and quality-assurance inspections in addition to other quality services.

BDS maintains Primus Global Food Safety and Organic Handling certifications, has an on-site U.S. Department of Agriculture inspection office, and has a full-time food-safety director implementing comprehensive employee training with rigorous inventory control protocols that exceed the basic requirements of the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. Detailed safety and security protocols ensure that product is continuously monitored for temperature, maturity, quality and tampering. The facility is monitored by 24-hour video surveillance and access to the product on site is carefully monitored and controlled.

Located in the south Texas Rio Grande Valley, BDS is minutes from three international bridges.
