William Watson, executive director of the National Mango Board, appears ready for snack time — actually the candy bar was a prop used in a presentation at the first America Trades Produce U.S.-Mexico Trade Conference underway in McAllen, TX.

Government and industry representatives from both sides of the border are meeting through Friday in a series of workshops and presentations that will explore the unique opportunities presented for both sides along the U.S.-Mexico border. As recently as mid-March, no more than 120 people were expected at the conference; as of noon March 31, last-minute and walk-up registration had pushed the number near 270, according to John McClung, executive director of the Texas Produce Association, which is co-hosting the event with the Fresh Produce Association of the Americas.
