SCC Fresh expects steady volume for company's second season

NOGALES, AZ — SCC Fresh LLC, here, which was formed in November 2009 by
Sergio Chamberlain, was "just starting up" and “didn't have much of anything,
really,” by way of product to offer. “But this year I am anticipating to have a
steadier program,” Mr. Chamberlain told The Produce News Nov. 10.
For the 2010-11 season, the company will be handling an assortment of
Mexican-grown items throughout the season. “My program is going to be
pretty much from start to finish,” fall through spring, he said.
“We are just getting started with our cucumbers and also our squash deals out
of Hermosillo [Sonora],” Mr. Chamberlain said. “We started receiving in
October, and we should be going here till about mid-December out of
Hermosillo,” weather permitting. Then the company will begin receiving
products from Los Mochis and Culiacan in the state of Sinaloa.
Mr. Chamberlain said that he anticipates “having a full line of different
commodities” this year. The product line SCC will be handling this season will
include an assortment of vegetable items such as bell peppers, cucumbers,
Italian squash “and a few tomatoes.” For the spring season, the company will
handle watermelons and “maybe a few honeydews” from Sonora.
The products will be packed in grower labels, he said.
In addition, he expects to do “a lot of consolidation in the warehouse.”
SCC’s Nogales warehouse facility consists of about 30,000 square feet of cold
storage, which enables the company to offer, in addition to the products it
receives directly from growers, “outsourcing and also consolidation, Mr.
Chamberlain said. “We have the facilities where we can do a lot of
consolidation for customers.”
One year ago at this time, “I was just getting the doors open,” said Mr.
Chamberlain, who had previously been chief executive office and sales
manager of Meyer LLC in Nogales. “Now I am doing my own thing, something
I have always wanted to do.” It is a challenge, he said, but “things are looking
good … very promising.”
