Charlie Eagle, vice president of business development for Southern Specialties Inc. in Pompano Beach, FL, told The Produce News in early December that the company hired Daryl Johnston to fill its newly created vice president of sales position.

"Daryl's responsibilities in the new position include creating strategies to drive profitable growth for our company, our customers and suppliers, and to provide input for new-product initiatives and maintain relationships with new and existing customers," said Mr. Eagle.

Mr. Johnston’s strong produce background includes 11 years in various management positions at Dole Fresh Vegetables. He also served as executive vice president of sales and marketing for B&W Quality Growers in Fellsmere, FL. His most recent position was vice president of sales and marketing for Greenline Foods in Perrysburg, OH. Mr. Johnson will work from the company’s Pompano Beach headquarters.

“I have long admired Southern Specialties,” Mr. Johnston said in a Dec. 7 press release announcing his appointment. “The company’s reputation for excellent products, innovation and corporate culture are outstanding. I look forward to being a valuable part of a great team.”

Tim Meissner, chief operating officer of Southern Specialties, noted in the press release, “Daryl’s knowledge and experience in our industry are well suited for the new position Southern Specialties has created. We look forward to having him as an integral part of our management team.”

Southern Specialties is a grower, importer, processor and shipper of specialty produce from the United States, Canada, Central America and South America. The company markets its “Southern Selects,” “Paradise Tropicals,” “Fiesta Fresh” and “Today’s Gourmet” line of products from distribution facilities in Pompano Beach; McAllen, TX; and Los Angeles.
