New York Produce Inc. set to open larger facility near Hunts Point market

by John Groh | November 15, 2010
New York Produce Inc. is preparing to open a larger cash-and-carry facility Dec. 1 in the Bronx, NY.

The company, which specializes in tropical produce and is based in Secaucus, NJ, had operated a 9,000-square-foot cash-and-carry on Grinnell Place two blocks from its new facility at 511 Barry Street, which is the former site of Baldor Specialty Foods Inc.

The Barry Street location has been completely renovated, is fully refrigerated and, at 45,000 square feet, is five times the size of the Grinnell Place location. The larger footprint will allow the company to display its full range of tropical and conventional produce, as well as its grocery items. There are 17 truck bays, with the ability to accommodate tractor-trailers and step vans alike, thus attracting both large and small customers, which include jobbers, brokers, restaurant operators and independent retailers.

"Our philosophy is to be an in-and-out facility," Jorge Valdivia, president of New York Produce Inc., told The Produce News Nov. 16. “We want it to be easy for customers to come in, pick their product, get a sales ticket and be on their way. We want to make everything go quicker.”

New York Produce Inc. was founded in 1984 by Mr. Valdivia's father, Elio, and had operated on the Bronx Terminal Market until 2006, when that market was razed to make way for the new Yankee Stadium.

Mr. Valdivia said that the Grinnell Place location was small, difficult for customers to find and had no parking. He had been in negotiations for the Barry Street facility for about a year and reached a deal in June. While he had hoped to open in September, the proceedings took longer than expected.

While there will be no formal grand opening ceremony on Dec. 1, Mr. Valdivia said that all are welcome to stop by to tour the facility.
