Martha Stewart and Ocean Spray join to fight childhood hunger

NEW YORK — Martha Stewart joined Ocean Spray Cranberries Inc. to fight childhood hunger and host a pre-Thanksgiving meal inside Ocean Spray's Big Apple Bog event held here Oct. 19 in front of the General Electric Building in Rockefeller Center.

Ms. Stewart, founder of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and host of "The Martha Stewart Show" on the Hallmark Channel, was joined by 45 children from two New York City public schools at a 50-foot-long table that was in the middle of more than 2,000 pounds of floating cranberries in the 1,500- square-foot mock bog, which Ocean Spray used to recreate the beauty and mystique of the cranberry harvest.

The fifth- and sixth-graders were treated to the meal of a lifetime, complete with an array of fun, fall-themed crafts and kid-friendly Thanksgiving dishes, prepared using Ms. Stewart’s recipes.

Ms. Stewart also taped a segment of her show at the bog, which will air Nov. 23 on the Hallmark Channel.

Ocean Spray kicked off its “Families Feeding Families” campaign that aims to raise awareness of and end childhood hunger in the United States at the event. The agricultural cooperative, a staple on American Thanksgiving tables, also announced a partnership with Share Our Strength, a national non-profit group that connects children with the nutritious food they need to lead healthy, active lives.

Ocean Spray will share the bounty of its harvest this year, and together with Share Our Strength has set a goal of seeing that every child has a seat at those Thanksgiving tables.

“Keeping in mind that nearly one in every four American children isn’t consistently receiving the food he or she needs to remain healthy, Ocean Spray and Share Our Strength are inviting families across the country to join their efforts in taking the No Kid Hungry pledge to end childhood hunger by 2015,” according to an Oct. 18 press release issued by Ocean Spray for the event. “Consumers are encouraged to join the fight on-line by pledging to make a difference in their communities at”

The release continued, “Share Our Strength ensures children in need are enrolled in federal nutrition programs, invests in community organizations fighting hunger, teaches families how to cook healthy meals on a budget, and builds public-private partnerships to end hunger, both nationally and at the state level.”

“Every child deserves a seat at the table,” Ms. Stewart said in the release. “Today is about pledging to help people live better by providing children with access to the food they need to live healthy, active lives. I’m proud to lend my support to raise awareness for the cause and hope to inspire others to get involved.”

“In the world’s richest nation, no child should ever go hungry,” Larry Martin, vice president of marketing at Ocean Spray, said in the press release. “There are more than 700 grower-families in our cooperative, some third-, fourth- and fifth-generation, all of whom place a high degree of worth on the next generation. This fall, Ocean Spray growers are investing in the next generation by sharing the bounty of their harvest and partnering with Share Our Strength to end childhood hunger in America.”
