Westmoreland Sales, a Leamington, ON-based greenhouse vegetable shipper, has added two industry veterans to its operation.

Matthew Wright, a veteran retailer who previously worked at A&P as vice president of procurement and vice president of produce, was hired in June as director of procurement.

Ruben Aboytes, who formerly worked for a seed company, joined Westmoreland in July as director of Mexican operations.

"We are happy to announce that two highly seasoned produce professionals have joined Westmoreland Sales," Ken Green, executive vice president of sales and marketing for the Leamington, ON-based company told The Produce News.

Mr. Wright left A&P several years ago and took a little time off before joining Westmoreland, according to Mr. Green.

“Matt looked at different opportunities during this time,” said Mr. Green. “I was also with A&P and ran the produce division for 25 years, so I knew him well. Westmoreland was looking for someone for the procurement position, and he agreed to join us.”

Mr. Wright's position will involve managing the supply side of Westmoreland Sales. He will work with the company’s internal growers, who are also the company’s owners, and he will manage product supply in Mexico, Costa Rica and other regions where the company does business.

Mr. Aboytes’ primary duty is to recruit growers to Westmoreland Sales.

“Ruben previously worked for a seed company,” said Mr. Green. “He is very well known and highly respected in Mexico. His excellent Mexican contacts will be a true value to our company. In the short time he has been with us, he has already proven his worth.”

Mr. Green added that Westmoreland Sales had great success at the PMA Fresh Summit event in Orlando, FL.

“We had a much bigger booth at PMA this year,” he said. “Retail participation was great, as was interaction with growers. It was a great show for us.”
