Curry & Co. is adding Vidalia sweet carrots to its product line, which currently features onions, sweet onions, potatoes and blueberries.
The carrots are grown, processed and packed in Statesboro, GA, at the 200,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art onion facility that Curry & Co. recently purchased from Gerrald Farms (see story on page 146). The facility attained certification from Primus, Davis Fresh and Silliker, and is in compliance with HACCP guidelines.
Like Vidalia onions, there are only select growing districts where Vidalia sweet carrots can be grown.
"Vidalia sweet onions are one of the most recognized names in the onion industry, and we fully expect our Vidalia sweet carrot to benefit from the high-quality reputation of Vidalia sweet onions," Curry & Co. President Matt Curry said in an Oct. 12 press release.
The majority of the Vidalia sweet carrots are grown by well-known and respected Vidalia onion growers Jamie Brannen and Terry Gerrald, who was the 2009 Vidalia Onion Committee's Grower of the Year. The harvest season runs from December to June.
Curry & Co. has exclusive rights and owns the “Vidalia Sweet Carrots” brand. “We're excited about adding Vidalia sweet carrots to our product line,” Mr. Curry added in the press release. “The unique soils of the growing region and the Georgia climate provide us with a great product that will likely be exciting to consumers. We feel our carrots are the sweetest in the country and offer a nice niche in produce departments.”
