Well-Pict to debut new berry varieties at Fresh Summit

by | October 13, 2010
Well-Pict Inc. will use the PMA Fresh Summit to introduce a premium proprietary strawberry variety that was specifically developed to produce larger berries later in the season as well as a new proprietary raspberry variety with superior flavor.

"These superior plants are already outperforming expectations," Dan Crowley, sales manager for Watsonville, CA-based Well-Pict, said in an Oct. 11 press release. “The bigger strawberries will make for even more beautiful displays this fall, which means even higher sales in produce departments.”

In addition to the new-to-the-market strawberry variety, Well-Pict will be featuring a recently developed proprietary raspberry variety.

Using tried-and-true growing methods of picking mother plants are picked based on the desired characteristics of the fruit they bear, this new raspberry variety has been naturally engineered to deliver not only larger berries but superior flavor as well. Absolutely no steroids or other growth hormones are used to produce this large-size fruit.

Well-Pict said that the plants are now mature enough to allow for 100 percent conversion to the new variety, with shipping currently taking place to all markets.

Both of the new strawberry and raspberry varieties will be on display and available for tasting at this year's PMA expo.

“We’re thrilled to have our new varieties ready for people to enjoy at this year’s show,” Mr. Crowley added in the press release. “It takes a lot of time, money and energy to develop superior varieties like these, and we think people will not only be able to see but also taste the difference.”
