California Giant raising funds to fight cancer
by | August 03, 2009
California Giant owners and staff are preparing to walk and run around the clock in the battle against cancer for the sixth consecutive year during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life this summer in Watsonville, CA. This 24-hour "celebration of life" brings numerous groups and individuals concerned about cancer together.
Before the California Giant team pitches their tents for the Relay for Life event Aug. 8, much work is done to raise funds in advance. The staff has been organizing several community fundraisers to meet fundraising goals.
As of July 21, the staff had already raised $18,000 from various fundraisers and a community barbecue held July 14 at its corporate offices. Over 680 lunches were prepared and sold, generating over $7,500 in profits toward the team goal. The entire Watsonville staff rolled up its collective sleeves to pre-sell lunch throughout the community, then began cooking early that morning in preparation for the hundreds of people that would soon stop by the office to collect their meals.
California Giant Berry Farms has served as the presenting sponsor for the event held in Watsonville since its inception. The company's team that attends each year is comprised of staff, owners and their families, who come together each year at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds for an overnight relay to raise money for cancer research and to raise awareness of the disease, which this year will be held from 10 a.m. Aug. 8 until 10 a.m. Aug. 9. Relay For Life allows participants from all walks of life -- including survivors, patients and their families, and medical support staff, as well as corporations, civic organizations, places of worship and community groups -- to join together to fight cancer.
"California Giant has been committed to fundraising for the American Cancer Society since the company was formed over 35 years ago," Bill Moncovich, president of California Giant, said in a press release. "Almost everyone you meet today has been touched by cancer either directly or with family or friends. We at Cal Giant believe strongly in the work being done by the American Cancer Society and support their efforts every year. California Giant encourages other members within the produce industry to get involved in a charitable organization like this. We are so proud of the efforts made by our staff to support the Relay for Life with such enthusiasm. Not only are we raising funds for a worthy cause, but we are creating such positive energy in the workplace here at Cal Giant."
