ARLINGTON, VA -- The Food Marketing Institute announced May 5 that Richard N. Jurgens, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Hy-Vee Inc., was elected chairman of the FMI board of directors.

He has served on FMI's board since 2005 and on the executive committee since 2007. He was FMI's chairman of the member services committee from 2007 to 2009.

Mr. Jurgens has spent his entire career with Hy-Vee, starting as a part-time carryout clerk and moving up the ranks to store manager, district manager, regional manager, senior vice president and executive vice president before assuming his current position. He also served as president of Perishable Distributors of Iowa, a Hy-Vee subsidiary for part of his career.

Based in West Des Moines, IA, Hy-Vee is an employee-owned corporation operating more than 225 retail stores in seven states: Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota.

Mr. Jurgens earned a bachelor of science degree from Iowa State University.
