At Verdelli Farms, two key family members depart

Harrisburg, PA-based Verdelli Farms Inc., a subsidiary of Salinas, CA-based Fresh Express Inc., is undergoing personnel changes as a result of the transition to becoming a Fresh Express entity.

Brothers Dan Verdelli and Mike Verdelli, former executive vice president and vice president of sales and marketing, respectively, are no longer part of the company's day-to-day operations.

"They (Dan and Mike) are involved in transitional responsibilities" but are not part of future plans with the company as the transition has been made into integrating Verdelli Farms into Chiquita Fresh Express, Bryan Brown, director of corporate communications for Cincinnati-based Chiquita Brands International Inc., parent company of Fresh Express, told The Produce News Jan. 27.

"Chiquita has integrated product lines and combined some operations at Verdelli," Mr. Brown said, adding that Chiquita continues to focus on meeting the needs of its customers in the Northeast.

Mr. Brown said that Chiquita is "working through a transition plan as we improve salad profitability."

Verdelli Farms, which was founded in 1924, was a family-owned-and- operated processor and distributor of value-added salads, vegetables and fruit snacks, with headquarters in Harrisburg, PA. The company was acquired in October 2007 by Fresh Express for an undisclosed amount. At the time of its sale to Fresh Express, Verdelli Farms had more than $80 million in annual revenues. In 2006, the company produced more than 8 million cartons of fresh salads, vegetables and fruit snacks.
